How to Identify Drug Use in the Workplace

Did you know that more than 70% of drug abusers in the United States currently have stable jobs? Many individuals who commonly use drugs are good at covering it up which can make it hard to identify drug use in the workplace. However, it’s important for companies to know what to look out for. Employees that are under the influence of drugs can have devastating effects on a business, including a loss in profits. This is just one of the reasons why drug testing in the workplace can be very useful, however, it’s also good to be aware of these red flags. 

Common Signs of Drug Abuse

As we mentioned before, those who commonly use drugs are good at covering it up. These problems can still be spotted if you pay close attention. If an employee is exhibiting two or more of these behaviors or characteristics, those are red flags, and it’s probably a good idea to have that employee tested. The most obvious signs to look out for include:

  • Increased lateness or absenteeism
  • Inconsistent work performance
  • Increase in accidents
  • Unsteady posture, weight loss, dental issues, etc.
  • Lack of appearance and grooming
  • Paranoia/Anxiety
  • Overreaction to suggestions or feedback
  • Withdrawal from conversations
  • Lack of sleep
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Mood swings

Problems That Drug Abuse in the Workplace Can Cause

Having an employee who abuses drugs can have large effects on your business. Research has shown that those who abuse drugs are five times more likely to ask their employers for workers’ compensation. They also are involved with 40% of on-the-job fatalities and cost a company three times as much on health care compared to the average employee. As you can see, those who are under the influence of drugs will have a negative effect on a company.

What Should Employers Do?

If these signs sound familiar to you in one or more of your employees, you have the right to a “reasonable suspicion” drug test. Make sure to look at your workplace drug testing policy to ensure testing is allowed. Even if the policy says otherwise, you still have the right to sit down and talk to the employee about their performance.
